Masonville grew quickly once London annexed it in 1961, and most of its streets took shape during a building boom in the 1980s. Today it is one of the city's most convenient places to live, with Masonville Place, a large shopping centre that opened in 1985, plus restaurants, larger stores and services along Fanshawe Park Road and Richmond Street. A branch of the London Public Library adds to the community feel.
Its location next to Western University makes it popular with faculty and staff, and with families who want schools, shopping and parks close together. Most homes are single-detached houses on quiet crescents, with townhouses and apartments mixed in. Because Masonville Place doubles as a transit hub, getting to campus or downtown without a car is easier here than in many suburban parts of the city.
